About Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences, Gulbarga
Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Kalaburagi is a prestigious autonomous government medical institution established in 2015 by the Government of Karnataka under the Department of Medical Education, situated on the District Hospital Campus, Sedam Road, Kalaburagi (formerly Gulbarga) — 585105. GIMS is one of the newer government medical colleges in the Hyderabad-Karnataka (HK) region — an educationally and medically underserved belt of North Karnataka — and is committed to correcting regional healthcare imbalances by producing skilled, community-oriented medical professionals. The college is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 150 MBBS seats. The 32-acre campus is spread over extraordinary architectural grandeur with a massive, aesthetically striking building infrastructure. GIMS currently admits 150 MBBS students per year and offers MD/MS postgraduate programmes across 17 specialties. The attached teaching hospital is the Government District Teaching Hospital, Kalaburagi — a 750–857 bedded multi-specialty government hospital with 30 emergency beds, Regional Diagnostic Laboratory, Dialysis Unit, Blood Bank, Radiology (X-Ray, USG, CT), Burns Ward, ART Centre for HIV care, Mortuary/Post-Mortem, Ayush Centre, and comprehensive OPD/IPD services covering the entire Hyderabad-Karnataka region. The hospital sees a high daily patient inflow providing exceptional clinical exposure across all departments. Under Article 371(J) of the Indian Constitution, 70% of state quota seats at GIMS are reserved for students from the Hyderabad-Karnataka region (Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari districts). The campus has an exclusive library spanning 2,400 sq.m. with 5,065+ books, 30 national and international journals, 40+ internet nodes, and a reading room accommodating 500 students simultaneously. Kalaburagi is well connected by air (~12 km from Kalaburagi Airport KLB), rail (major railhead on Central Southern Railway zone connecting Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad), and road (NH-218 to Bengaluru ~610 km; NH-65 to Hyderabad ~225 km).
