About Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research

Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), New Delhi is a premier private deemed medical college established in 2012 as a constituent faculty of Jamia Hamdard University — an Institute of Eminence under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. HIMSR was established through a resolution adopted by the Executive Council of Jamia Hamdard in its 60th meeting held in March 2010. The Medical Council of India approved intake of students for AY 2012-13, and the first batch began in July 2012. HIMSR became the sixth medical college in NCT Delhi and the first model hospital in the public-private sector within the capital. It is a self-financing, unaided private medical institute managed by the Hamdard National Foundation under the aegis of Jamia Hamdard. HIMSR is affiliated with Jamia Hamdard University (Deemed University with A+ NAAC grade) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The parent university was founded in 1963 by eminent Unani physician Hakim Abdul Hameed, with roots in a 1906 Unani medicine clinic — giving HIMSR a unique heritage blending modern medicine with traditional Unani scholarship. HIMSR's teaching hospital is Hakeem Abdul Hameed Centenary (HAHC) Hospital — a 740-bedded NABH-accredited multi-specialty hospital providing tertiary-level medical care in 2 blocks (Block A and Block B). The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostics (MRI, CT scan, modern pathology labs), well-maintained modular operation theatres, ICUs, a 24×7 emergency department, trauma care unit, and speciality services in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, and more. The 35,000 sq.m. campus features a 15,000 sq.m. college building with AC lecture halls, large auditorium with examination halls, demonstration rooms, specialized laboratories for all pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects, a library with e-resources, a cafeteria, sports complex, gymnasium, and a yoga centre. HIMSR offers MBBS (150 seats), MD/MS in 14+ disciplines, and Ph.D. programmes. A significant unique feature is that 50% of MBBS seats (75 out of 150) are reserved for Muslim Minority candidates — reflecting Jamia Hamdard's commitment to minority educational empowerment. HIMSR has been consistently ranked among India's top medical colleges: NIRF rank 33 (2023), NIRF rank 37 (Jamia Hamdard Medical, 2024), Collegedunia rank 369 (2025). The CEO of HIMSR is Dr. G.N. Qazi, a renowned biomedical scientist with over 40 years of research experience who served as Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard (2008–2016). The current Dean of HIMSR is Dr. Sudhir Kumar Jain — a distinguished academic surgeon with FRCS (Edinburgh) fellowship and an MBA in Health Care Administration.
