About Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research

Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR), New Delhi is a premier private deemed medical college established in 2012 as a constituent faculty of Jamia Hamdard University — an Institute of Eminence under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. HIMSR was established through a resolution adopted by the Executive Council of Jamia Hamdard in its 60th meeting held in March 2010. The Medical Council of India approved intake of students for AY 2012-13, and the first batch began in July 2012. HIMSR became the sixth medical college in NCT Delhi and the first model hospital in the public-private sector within the capital. It is a self-financing, unaided private medical institute managed by the Hamdard National Foundation under the aegis of Jamia Hamdard. HIMSR is affiliated with Jamia Hamdard University (Deemed University with A+ NAAC grade) and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The parent university was founded in 1963 by eminent Unani physician Hakim Abdul Hameed, with roots in a 1906 Unani medicine clinic — giving HIMSR a unique heritage blending modern medicine with traditional Unani scholarship. HIMSR's teaching hospital is Hakeem Abdul Hameed Centenary (HAHC) Hospital — a 740-bedded NABH-accredited multi-specialty hospital providing tertiary-level medical care in 2 blocks (Block A and Block B). The hospital is equipped with advanced diagnostics (MRI, CT scan, modern pathology labs), well-maintained modular operation theatres, ICUs, a 24×7 emergency department, trauma care unit, and speciality services in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, and more. The 35,000 sq.m. campus features a 15,000 sq.m. college building with AC lecture halls, large auditorium with examination halls, demonstration rooms, specialized laboratories for all pre-clinical and para-clinical subjects, a library with e-resources, a cafeteria, sports complex, gymnasium, and a yoga centre. HIMSR offers MBBS (150 seats), MD/MS in 14+ disciplines, and Ph.D. programmes. A significant unique feature is that 50% of MBBS seats (75 out of 150) are reserved for Muslim Minority candidates — reflecting Jamia Hamdard's commitment to minority educational empowerment. HIMSR has been consistently ranked among India's top medical colleges: NIRF rank 33 (2023), NIRF rank 37 (Jamia Hamdard Medical, 2024), Collegedunia rank 369 (2025). The CEO of HIMSR is Dr. G.N. Qazi, a renowned biomedical scientist with over 40 years of research experience who served as Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard (2008–2016). The current Dean of HIMSR is Dr. Sudhir Kumar Jain — a distinguished academic surgeon with FRCS (Edinburgh) fellowship and an MBA in Health Care Administration.

Frequently Asked Questions

HIMSR has 150 total NMC-approved MBBS seats. A unique distribution applies: 50% (75 seats) are reserved for Muslim Minority candidates — filled via MCC Deemed University counselling with a lower NEET cutoff requirement. The remaining seats (~35% open/general + ~15% NRI) are also filled via MCC Deemed University counselling. There is no state government-managed state quota at HIMSR (being a deemed university). All seats go through MCC's Deemed University counselling portal (mcc.nic.in). MCC caution deposit: ₹2,00,000 refundable.

HIMSR offers MD/MS in 14+ disciplines: MD General Medicine, MD Microbiology, MD Pathology, MD Pharmacology, MD Dermatology & Venereology, MD Anaesthesiology, MD Radiodiagnosis, MD Community Medicine, MS General Surgery, MS Obstetrics & Gynaecology, MS Orthopaedics, MS Ophthalmology, MS ENT, and others. NEET PG 2024 overall closing ranks: 3,623–1,29,030 for General category. Most competitive: MD Dermatology (rank ~3,600–5,000). PG stipend: ₹80,000/month for 3 years (confirmed by Shiksha student review). 50% PG seats AIQ via MCC + 50% Delhi State Quota also via MCC. No rural bond — discontinuation bond mandatory.

Jamia Hamdard's 'Institute of Eminence' status (2019) — one of only 20 in India — is extremely significant for HIMSR: (1) ₹1,000 crore government funding for 5 years to upgrade infrastructure and research; (2) Greater academic autonomy to run cutting-edge programmes; (3) NAAC A+ grade for the parent university; (4) Jamia Hamdard's Faculty of Pharmacy is ranked #2 in India by NIRF (2024) — reflecting an exceptional research environment that benefits HIMSR's clinical research programmes; (5) International recognition: Jamia Hamdard's expertise in traditional Unani medicine combined with modern medicine research gives HIMSR a unique interdisciplinary research identity; (6) The parent university was founded by Hakim Abdul Hameed, a legendary figure in Indian healthcare — HIMSR carries this legacy.

This has conflicting information across sources: (1) Edufever (Dec 2025) states: 'No, there is no rural service bond, but a discontinuation bond is mandatory.' (2) MBBSCouncil states: 'After MBBS course completion in Jamia Hamdard Medical College, candidates should undergo compulsory rural service. If they skip, they need to pay service bond penalty.' The most recent and authoritative source (Edufever) suggests no rural bond but a discontinuation bond exists. Students must confirm the current bond terms directly with HIMSR at time of admission as policies may have changed.
