Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT BBS), established in 2008 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, is the first IIT in Odisha and among the eight new-generation IITs set up to expand access to world-class technical education across the country. Located in Bhubaneswar — Odisha's capital and a rapidly growing smart city and IT hub — IIT BBS occupies a 936-acre permanent campus at Argul, Khordha, nestled at the foot of the scenic Barunei Hills. This is one of the largest campuses among the newer IITs, developed as a fully integrated, self-contained academic township. IIT Bhubaneswar serves a total student community of 3,230, comprising 1,977 enrolled in B.Tech and Dual Degree (B.Tech+M.Tech) programmes, 210 in M.Sc, 441 in M.Tech, 579 in Ph.D, and 93 in the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (B.Sc-B.Ed). B.Tech programmes are offered in seven disciplines: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering Physics, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, with a total intake of approximately 496 seats. At the postgraduate level, M.Tech programmes are offered in 14+ specialisations including CSE, Structural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Signal Processing, Power Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Geomechanics and Mining Sciences. M.Sc programmes are offered in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, and Atmosphere and Earth Sciences via IIT JAM. A Joint M.Sc–PhD programme in Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences and PhD/MS by Research programmes are available across all departments. IIT Bhubaneswar fosters an interdisciplinary research culture with active groups in AI, Smart Materials, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Biomedical Devices, Atmospheric Science, Ocean Studies, Semiconductor Research, and Structural Mechanics. The institute holds collaborative tie-ups with national labs and international universities. The 936-acre campus features state-of-the-art smart classrooms, well-equipped research laboratories, a central library with access to IEEE, Springer, Elsevier, and ACM Digital Library, a high-performance computing facility, and four halls of residence with a combined capacity of approximately 2,000 students. The campus also uniquely showcases defence specimens of fighter aircraft as part of its learning environment. The Career Development Cell (CDC) recorded an all-time high in 2024-25 with the highest package reaching INR 67.6 LPA and an overall B.Tech placement rate of 90.07%. CSE achieves a 92.4% placement rate with an average package of INR 23.2 LPA. Major recruiters include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Reliance Industries, Flipkart, D.E. Shaw, Oracle, Jaguar Land Rover, Analog Devices, MathWorks, Zomato, Caterpillar, HCL Technologies, Tata Steel R&T, and PSUs like BEL, BPCL, HPCL, EIL, and OIL.
