Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu), established in 2016 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, holds the singular distinction of being the first and only IIT in Jammu and Kashmir. As one of six third-generation IITs, IIT Jammu was set up with a national mandate to democratize access to world-class technical education in a region historically underserved by premier institutions. Initially mentored by IIT Delhi, IIT Jammu has benefited from structured academic, research, and administrative guidance during its formative years. IIT Jammu operates from its permanent campus at Jagti, Nagrota, on National Highway 44 – approximately 14 km from Jammu city centre and 17 km from Jammu Airport. The 416-acre green campus, inaugurated in 2022, is purpose-built with state-of-the-art academic buildings, modern laboratories, hostels, sports infrastructure, and sustainable design elements. The campus is currently in active expansion to accommodate the institute's growing student body of 1,300+ across B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, and PhD programs. IIT Jammu has assembled a team of highly qualified faculty members with doctoral and post-doctoral training from leading national and international institutions. Areas of active research strength include Smart Cities and Infrastructure, Himalayan Geology and Glaciology, Avalanche Prediction, Cold-Climate Structural Engineering, AI and Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Water Resources Management, and Disaster Mitigation. The campus features lecture halls fitted with smart audio-visual systems, well-equipped research labs, a growing central library with digital resources, a computer centre with high-speed internet, a gymnasium, indoor and outdoor sports facilities. The hostels provide twin-sharing accommodation for first and second-year students and single-occupancy rooms for seniors. All hostel rooms are equipped with basic furniture, Wi-Fi, and water coolers. A 24/7 medical unit provides primary healthcare and emergency referrals.
