Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar), established in 2008 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now Ministry of Education), Government of India, is one of the eight second-generation IITs and holds the distinction of being Punjab's only IIT. Located in Rupnagar — a city historically significant as the site of one of the most important Indus Valley Civilisation excavations — IIT Ropar draws deep inspiration from its cultural heritage. The institute's sprawling 525-acre campus on the banks of the Sutlej River is widely regarded as one of the most aesthetically planned and ecologically thoughtful campuses among newer IITs. IIT Ropar currently offers B.Tech in 11 specializations — including pioneering programs in Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering (AIDE), Engineering Physics, and Digital Agriculture — making it one of the few IITs offering a dedicated agricultural technology engineering program. Total B.Tech intake is 646 seats (including supernumerary female seats). At the postgraduate level, M.Tech is offered across 19 specializations spanning CSE, EE, ME, Civil, Biomedical, Materials, and the uniquely forward-looking Autonomous Systems and Drone Technology program. M.Sc is offered in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Data Science. Ph.D. programs span 22+ research disciplines. Research at IIT Ropar is distinctively Himalayan and agrarian in focus — pioneering work in Smart Agriculture and AI-for-Farming (the PRAIRIE research initiative), disaster-resilient Himalayan infrastructure, clean water technologies, biomedical devices, and sustainable energy systems. The institute has been ranked in the Top 100 globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026 — a remarkable achievement for an institute less than two decades old. In NIRF 2025, IIT Ropar ranks 32nd in Engineering, 56th Overall, and 47th in Research Institutions. It is ranked 11th in NIRF Innovation 2024 and 12th by IIRF 2024, and stands at 176th in QS Asian University Rankings (Southern Asia) 2026. In 2024-25 placements, the average CTC for B.Tech students reached INR 23.07 LPA, the median was INR 18 LPA, and the highest domestic package was INR 55 LPA — with international offers exceeding INR 2 Crore. Over 134 companies visited campus including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, DE Shaw, Intel, Uber, Texas Instruments, and Qualcomm. The Career Development and Placement Centre (CDPC) also conducts a structured internship program, with average internship stipends of INR 22,000/month. Annual techno-cultural festival Synergy attracts participants from across the country.
