About K S Hegde Medical Academy, Mangalore

K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Mangalore, is a premier private medical institution established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust, located in Deralakatte — approximately 13 km from Mangalore city centre. KSHEMA is a constituent college of NITTE (Deemed to be University) and issues its own NITTE University degrees (not RGUHS — it was affiliated to RGUHS until 2009). The college is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), accredited with NAAC Grade A+, and recognized by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). It is named after its visionary founder, late Justice K.S. Hegde — former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and Speaker of the Lok Sabha — who founded the Nitte Education Trust in 1979. The 52-acre green campus is home to the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital — a 1,000+ bedded NABH-accredited multi-specialty teaching hospital with 12 broad specialties and 15 super specialties, serving as a major referral centre for coastal Karnataka. The hospital has a state-of-the-art IVF: Fertility and Reproductive Medicine Centre (under OBG) and an active CCrISP (Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patients) training programme. KSHEMA has 233 faculty members and strong research infrastructure with an active Central Research Laboratory; it maintains international collaborations with University of Toronto (Canada), Wake Forest University (USA), National University of Singapore, St. John's Research Institute (India), and BARC Research Centre of Mangalore University.
