About Kasturba Medical College, Manipal
Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Manipal is India's first self-financing private medical college, established on 30 June 1953 by Dr. Tonse Madhava Anantha Pai (T.M.A. Pai) — a visionary philanthropist and educationist who recognised that the Government alone could not meet India's healthcare education needs. Starting on a barren hillock in Manipal (Udupi District), which has transformed into a thriving, lush green international university town, KMC Manipal has grown over 72 years to become one of India's most prestigious and globally recognised medical institutions. KMC received recognition from the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1958, making it the first private medical college to do so. The college is a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) — a Deemed-to-be-University since 1993 and an Institution of Eminence (MHRD, 2020) — which is ranked 4th among Indian universities by NIRF 2024, 14th overall, 901–950 globally by QS 2025, and 251–300 in Medicine globally (2nd in India after AIIMS). KMC Manipal itself is ranked 9th in the Medical category by NIRF 2024, 10th by NIRF 2025, 7th by The Week 2024, 12th–13th by India Today 2024–25 (2nd in Karnataka), and 31st by Collegedunia 2025. KMC Manipal has an alumni network of 14,500+ graduates from 30+ countries. The college is internationally recognized by GMC (UK), ECFMG (USA), AMC (Australia), and MMC (Malaysia). It holds the first-ever AAHRPP accreditation in India (2011) — confirming world-class research ethics standards. It is the birthplace of the Manipal Hospitals chain — the 2nd largest healthcare provider in India with 28+ hospitals — which traces its origins directly to KMC. The 72-year-old Kasturba Hospital at Manipal has grown from 150 beds (1961) to a 2,032-bed super-specialty hospital handling 3,500+ outpatients daily. KMC Manipal offers 250 MBBS seats, 222 PG (MD/MS) seats in 55 disciplines, Super-Specialty (DM/M.Ch) courses, PhD programmes, MSc in Medical Sciences (via MET), Fellowship programmes, UG electives for international students, and 15+ short-term certification courses. The college celebrates Diamond Jubilee (2013–14) milestones and was ranked 2nd most preferred private medical college in India after AIIMS. International academic linkages include University of Wisconsin (Madison, USA), University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), Keele University (Newcastle, UK), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Minnesota (USA), and Operation Eyesight Universal (Canada). Students from UK, Ireland, USA, New Zealand, Kenya, Netherlands, and Malaysia regularly opt for elective postings at KMC Manipal.
