About Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences, Koppal
Koppal Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Koppal) is a fully autonomous government medical college established in 2013 by the Government of Karnataka, located on Gangavathi Road, approximately 5 km from the Koppal Bus Terminal, in Koppal city — a historically significant district headquarters in North Karnataka and part of the Hyderabad-Karnataka (HK) region under Article 371J of the Constitution. Affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC), KIMS Koppal offers 150 MBBS seats per year and MD/MS postgraduate courses across 14 specialties (~60 PG seats). The campus covers 25 acres and comprises blocks of pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments along with the hospital block. The Library building is a two-floor structure with a carpet area of 27,000 sq.ft., seating capacity of 360 persons, and a reading room on the first floor — with a total collection of 5,018 books and 44 magazines classified using DDC. Four air-conditioned lecture hall complexes and a separate 1,000-seat auditorium are on campus. Separate hostels for boys and girls with mess facilities, staff quarters, and a spacious playground are also provided. The KIMS Koppal Teaching Hospital — a dedicated teaching facility built on campus — is a 650+ bedded multi-specialty hospital (some sources cite 750+ beds with expansion) treating over 1,000 OPD patients daily and providing 24×7 emergency services, ICU, Blood Bank, OT complex, and full-spectrum clinical services across General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, OBG, Orthopaedics, ENT, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis, Psychiatry, Community Medicine, and Forensic Medicine. The hospital has a dedicated 2D Echo technician (Cardiology) and advanced diagnostic services. An additional affiliated Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Hospital is co-located. KIMS Koppal is the only medical college in Koppal district, serving as the region's primary tertiary healthcare and medical education centre. Koppal is known for the Tungabhadra dam, Anantagiri Fort, Kuknoor Jain temples, and is close to UNESCO World Heritage Site Hampi (65 km) and Vijayanagara heritage sites. ⚠️ Article 371(J) HK Reservation: KIMS Koppal being located in the HK region means that 70% of state quota MBBS seats are reserved for students from the six HK districts (Koppal, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Yadgir, and Ballari). An additional 8% of seats in all other Karnataka government colleges outside the HK region are also reserved for HK region candidates — a significant structural advantage for Koppal-district students.
