About Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College, Kalaburagi, Gulbarga
Mahadevappa Rampure Medical College (MRMC), Kalaburagi — popularly known as MRMC Gulbarga — is one of the oldest and most historically significant private medical colleges in India, established in 1963 by the Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society (HKES) under the visionary leadership of Sri Mahadevappa Rampure. The college was founded with a mission to improve the health status and education of the people of the historically underserved Hyderabad-Karnataka (HK) region of North Karnataka, when the Government of Karnataka decided to set up a state medical college in Bellary instead of Gulbarga — leaving the region without a medical institution. MRMC received recognition from the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1972 — making it the SECOND PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGE IN INDIA after KMC Manipal to receive this recognition. It also received recognition from the British Medical Council (now GMC, UK) — a rare early international recognition. MRMC is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and approved by NMC for 200 MBBS seats (recently increased from 150). The college offers 157 PG seats across 19 MD/MS specialties. The Basaveshwar Teaching and General Hospital (opened January 1967, 1,000+ beds) and Sangameshwar Teaching Hospital (765+ beds combined) together form the attached teaching hospital complex. From 2005, all clinical teaching activity was moved from the District General Hospital to these dedicated teaching hospitals to satisfy NMC standards. Notable alumni include Dr. Y.S. Raja Sekhara Reddy (former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh), Dr. Sharanprakash Patil (Cabinet Minister, Government of Karnataka), and Dr. Chandrasekhar Patil (Member of Parliament). The college has 165 faculty members, a fully operational sports department with an indoor sports complex (badminton, TT, chess, carrom), and modern campus infrastructure including updated lecture theatres, clinical skills labs, digital library, seminar halls, and well-equipped departmental laboratories. The college is ranked Open Management #27, Karnataka State Management #10, Karnataka State #41 in NEET 2024 counselling preference — among the top-tier private colleges in North Karnataka. NEET state quota score benchmark: 500–550 marks. ⚠️ HK 371(J) Reservation: 70% of state quota seats reserved for candidates from the 6 HK region districts.

MRMC was established in 1963 when the Karnataka Government decided to set up its state medical college in Bellary instead of Gulbarga — depriving the underserved HK region of a medical institution. The Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society, under Sri Mahadevappa Rampure, stepped in to establish a private medical college. In 1972, MRMC received recognition from MCI — becoming only the SECOND PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGE IN INDIA to receive MCI recognition after KMC Manipal. It also received recognition from the British Medical Council (now GMC, UK). This 60+ year legacy makes it one of India's most historically important private medical colleges.
NEET state quota General merit: 500–550 marks. Management quota: ~400–480 marks. MRMC is ranked Karnataka State Management #10 — among the top-tier private colleges in North Karnataka. HK-region candidates (Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari) access 70% of state quota seats at lower effective cutoffs. Exact round-wise cutoffs on KEA portal.
MRMC is in Kalaburagi — the headquarters of the HK region. 70% of state quota MBBS seats are reserved for candidates domiciled in the 6 HK districts (Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir, Koppal, Ballari) who have studied there for 7+ years. Only ~30% of state quota is open to non-HK Karnataka candidates. HK-region candidates also have 8% of state quota reserved for them in ALL other Karnataka government and private colleges. This is a substantial benefit for HK-region NEET aspirants.
