About North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Shillong
North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, is one of the most prestigious central government medical institutions in India, conceived and established on the lines of AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh as a regional centre of excellence for the seven sister states and Sikkim of Northeast India. Established in 1987 by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, NEIGRIHMS stands on a sprawling, picturesque campus at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The campus is situated adjacent to a reserve forest, offering one of the most serene and ecologically unique academic environments among all medical colleges in India. NEIGRIHMS is affiliated with the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, and is fully recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It is an autonomous institute under MoHFW, functioning with a governance structure similar to AIIMS — with a Governing Body chaired by the Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare and an Executive Committee for academic and administrative oversight. The institute's mission is to bridge the gap in advanced medical education, specialized health services, and regional healthcare policy in the chronically underserved Northeast region. The MBBS program was commenced from the session 2008 with an initial annual intake of 50 seats. From the 2024 batch, the seat strength has been increased to 100 seats per year — a landmark decision that doubles the institute's MBBS capacity. The MBBS program is of 4.5 years duration followed by 1 year of compulsory rotating internship. The NEIGRIHMS MBBS seat distribution is unique and region-specific: Meghalaya (14 seats), Nagaland (10 seats), NE Open — for all eight NE states including Sikkim (18 seats; filled via NEET UG), and All India Quota (8 seats via MCC). An additional 50 seats (expansion batch) are now filled across these categories from 2024 onwards. For the NE Open category (18 seats), NEIGRIHMS conducts its own competitive entrance examination in July each year. Candidates must have a Permanent Residential Certificate from one of the 8 NE states. For the All India Quota (8 seats), selection is strictly through MCC NEET UG counselling. For the Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh state-specific seats, respective state governments nominate candidates based on their own processes. Postgraduate programs at NEIGRIHMS are conducted through NEET PG — 50% AIQ via MCC and 50% through the institute's own counselling for NE state candidates. MD/MS courses span multiple specializations including Radiodiagnosis, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Dermatology, Anaesthesia, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, and more. Super-specialty DM courses including DM Cardiology are also offered. The PG prospectus 2025-26 carries an application processing fee of ₹1,500. The NEIGRIHMS hospital campus features a 594-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital serving the healthcare needs of a vast population across Northeast India. Hospital facilities include a blood bank, 24-hour emergency services, telemedicine, palliative care, dietary services, private wards, and comprehensive clinical services across all major specialties and sub-specialties. Advanced diagnostic capabilities and super-specialty care are available through DM Cardiology and other programs. The campus infrastructure is exceptional for a government institute. Facilities include a 3-floor air-conditioned central library housing over 25,000 medical books, e-journals, and other medical literature — open 9 AM–9 PM on weekdays and 9 AM–7 PM on Saturdays. Sports facilities are world-class: the campus was used for Asian Games training in the past and has a world-class basketball court, badminton courts, squash court, tennis court, a swimming pool (historic), and a newly equipped gymnasium. Students are accommodated in fully furnished hostels with 24-hour electricity, mess, and maintenance services, accommodating up to 195 students. The annual cultural festival, 'EUPHORIA', is a 7-day inter-college event covering literary, cultural, and sports activities — a hallmark of campus life at NEIGRIHMS. MBBS tuition fee is approximately ₹16,600 per year (highly subsidized for a central government premier institute). PG tuition fee is approximately ₹2,07,000 per year. No management quota seats exist — 100% admission is merit-based through NEET. NEIGRIHMS was ranked 43rd under the medical category in NIRF 2021. The NEET UG 2024 AIQ General category closing rank was approximately 24,090, with a 2025 Round 1 opening rank of 10,679. NEET PG closing ranks for MD courses range widely (1,260–91,010 for General AI in round 3), reflecting the competitive demand for this premier institution.
