About North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research
The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Folk Medicine Research (NEIAFMR), Pasighat, is a premier autonomous national institute established under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. Originally founded on 21st February 2008 as the North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine (NEIFM), the institute underwent a significant mandate expansion in August 2021 through a Gazette Notification, incorporating Ayurveda academic courses and adopting its current name. Located in Pasighat, East Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh โ one of India's most biodiverse and ecologically rich regions โ NEIAFMR occupies a sprawling 40-acre campus at the opposite end of the APST Bus Terminus in the high region of the town. The institute is registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, and its academic programme is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University (A Central University), Rono Hills, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh. BAMS courses at NEIAFMR are governed by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and adhere to all regulations prescribed by the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. The institute is also listed under NABH accreditation, reflecting its commitment to quality healthcare delivery. NEIAFMR was established with the overarching goal of strengthening and developing traditional healthcare practices for the benefit of the nation, with a focused mandate on the North Eastern region of India โ a zone of extraordinary ethnobotanical diversity, where folk medicine and traditional healing practices have been preserved for generations across multiple tribes and indigenous communities. The institute functions as an apex research centre for all aspects of Local Health Traditions (LHT) and Ethno-Medical Practices. It creates an essential interface between traditional healers and scientific research institutions, enabling the survey, documentation, and scientific validation of folk medicine practices, remedies, and therapies for potential integration into mainstream healthcare and future pharmaceutical research. In Phase I of its campus development, 16 acres have been developed to house Administrative Buildings (3,915.68 sq mt.), a Guest House (192 sq mt.), and a Thematic Medicinal Plant Garden spread across 2.5 hectares (5 hectares total including an Aquatic Pond, Orchidarium, and Vermicompost tank). The institute is equipped with a 60-bedded indoor hospital offering Ayurvedic, Modern Medicine, and Traditional Healing services, along with Telemedicine and OPD facilities. The Research Unit maintains well-equipped laboratories for Life Sciences, Folk Medicine, Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry, a Herbarium Museum, and a comprehensive library. On the academic front, NEIAFMR conducts the 5.5-year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) programme, comprising 4.5 years of full-time study and a 1-year mandatory rotatory internship. With an annual intake of 30 students, the programme is uniquely structured: 50% of seats (15 seats) are filled from All India Quota (AIQ) through centralized counselling by AACCC (Ayush Admissions Central Counselling Committee) via www.aaccc.gov.in; the remaining 15 seats are reserved for students from North Eastern states, of which 5 seats are specifically allocated for Arunachal Pradesh candidates and 10 seats for students from other NE states. All NE state admissions are based on NEET UG scores and follow Government of India reservation policies. Departments currently operational include Samhita and Siddhanta, Kaya Chikitsa (General Medicine), Panchakarma, and Prasuti Tantra and Stree Roga (Gynaecology and Obstetrics), with further departments being established progressively as the institution expands. The Panchakarma department has been fully functional since 2018, gaining popularity in the region and emerging as one of the most sought-after Panchakarma centres in the North East. The Samhita and Siddhanta department covers foundational Ayurvedic texts including Padartha Vigyan, Maulik Siddhanta, Ashtanga Hridaya, Charak Samhita, and Research Methodology across all professional years. The institute's mission spans academic excellence, research leadership in folk medicine, capacity building for Ayurveda and Traditional Medicine practitioners, intellectual property protection for indigenous healthcare knowledge, and public health awareness. NEIAFMR aspires to become a Centre of Excellence in Pharmacognosy and Pharmacological Research and to develop lasting linkages with national and international research institutions. Its unique position at the intersection of Ayurveda and North Eastern folk medicine makes it unlike any other institution in India โ a living bridge between classical Shastra and living tribal healing traditions. Students admitted here gain not only a sound Ayurvedic medical education but also unparalleled exposure to ethnobotanical research, biodiversity conservation, and the folk medicine systems of Arunachal Pradesh and the broader North Eastern region.
