About Shillong Medical College, Shillong

Shillong Medical College (SMC) represents a defining moment in Meghalaya's history — it is the first government-run medical college of the state, receiving formal NMC approval in September 2025 and commencing its first MBBS batch in the academic session 2025-26 with an initial intake of 50 students. Located at Pasteur Hills, Lawmali, Shillong — within the compound of the historic Pasteur Institute — the college brings long-overdue government medical education to the capital city and heart of Meghalaya. Health Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh announced the NMC approval as a 'game changer' for the state's healthcare and education landscape. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma was reported to be in discussions with the Prime Minister's Office to have Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself inaugurate the college — a reflection of the national significance attached to this milestone. The first batch of students was expected to begin classes in late September 2025, aligned with the NEET UG counselling calendar. The establishment of SMC was driven by Meghalaya's chronic shortage of medical professionals and the acute need to reduce the dependence of local students on institutions in other states. Before SMC, Meghalaya students seeking government medical seats were primarily dependent on NEIGRIHMS (Shillong) and RIMS Imphal, which together offered only 94 MBBS seats for Meghalaya students. SMC adds 50 new government MBBS seats, significantly expanding the state's medical education capacity. SmC operates under a brownfield development model — utilising existing healthcare infrastructure rather than constructing new facilities from scratch. The Civil Hospital and Pasteur Hills Hospital serve as the primary teaching hospital facilities for SMC, eliminating the time and cost of new hospital construction and enabling the college to become functional faster. This practical approach ensures students receive clinical training at established, functional healthcare facilities from Day 1. The campus at Pasteur Hills, Lawmali, is a well-known address in Shillong, formerly associated with the Pasteur Institute — a facility with deep historical roots in Northeast India's public health infrastructure. The location provides easy access to Shillong city, local transport, and essential services, making it centrally placed for students from Meghalaya and neighbouring states. As a state government medical college, SMC aims to offer highly subsidized medical education to students. The course fees have been officially fixed at ₹30,000 per year, inclusive of hostel accommodation, for Meghalaya state students — making it one of the most affordable medical colleges in Northeast India. The first batch of 50 MBBS seats has been sanctioned by NMC for 2025-26, with plans to expand seat capacity in subsequent years. SMC is affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong — the same central university that affiliates NEIGRIHMS. This ensures academic standards are aligned with national norms and that SMC degrees are fully recognized across India. The college infrastructure includes modern, well-equipped classrooms, departmental laboratories, a central library with medical books and journals, hostels for boys and girls, and a sports ground. A dedicated faculty team experienced in various medical disciplines has been assembled to support the first batch. With SMC, Meghalaya now joins the growing list of Northeast states (Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh) that have successfully established their own state government medical colleges. The institution is expected to grow rapidly — in seat capacity, PG programs, and clinical infrastructure — in the coming years, fulfilling the state's vision of healthcare self-sufficiency and medical education equity.
