About St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore

St. John's Medical College (SJMC) is one of India's most prestigious and historic private medical institutions, established in July 1963 by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) in Bengaluru. Named after St. John the Baptist — the patron of Pope John XXIII, who warmly endorsed the project — the college was dedicated as a memorial of the XXXVIII International Eucharistic Congress held in Bombay in 1964. The cornerstone was blessed by Pope Paul VI in 1964 and laid by Shri V.V. Giri (Governor of Karnataka, later President of India) in 1965. The college moved to its permanent 140-acre campus in Koramangala in June 1968, and was dedicated on September 29, 1968, by President Dr. Zakir Hussain. It forms the flagship institution of the St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences (SJNAHS), which also encompasses St. John's Medical College Hospital (est. 1975), St. John's Research Institute (est. 2004), St. John's College of Nursing (est. 1980; upgraded 1989), and St. John's Institute of Health Management and Para Medical Studies. SJMC is affiliated to RGUHS, recognized by NMC, and accredited with NAAC 5-Star Grading. The college offers MBBS (150 seats), PG MD/MS programs (100 seats across 20+ departments), Super-Specialty DM/MCh programs across multiple departments, and doctoral/fellowship/elective programs in Medicine, Nursing, and Allied Health Sciences. The attached 1,350-bed teaching hospital receives approximately 1,800–2,000 outpatients daily and has over 40 full-fledged specialty and super-specialty departments. SJMC has the unique distinction of producing more Rhodes Scholars than any other medical college in India — with 7 Rhodes Scholars. It is consistently ranked among India's top 30 medical colleges by NIRF (ranked 28th in 2024, 30th in 2025) and was ranked 4th nationally by Outlook India in 2017. From its inception, SJMC has been a truly national medical college drawing faculty and students from across the country and the world.
