About Subbaiah Institute of Medical Sciences, Shimoga, Karnataka

Subbaiah Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), also known as Subbaiah Medical College (SMC) Shimoga, is a reputed private medical college located on NH-13, Purle, Holey Honnur Road, Shivamogga (Shimoga), Karnataka — the 'Gateway to Malnad' in the scenic lap of the Western Ghats. The college was established in 2012 as a unit of the Tadikela Subbaiah Trust (R), founded in 2003 by Sri T. Subbaramaiah — a visionary agriculturist who dedicated himself to advancing education and research in underserved regions. The trust is closely held by a family of practising and teaching doctors: Dr. S. Nagendra (MD), Dr. S. Srinivas (MD), Dr. Lata R. Telang (MBBS, DGO), and Dr. Vinaya Kumari (MBBS, DCP). SIMS is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). The institution also encompasses the Subbaiah Research Institute, and Malnad Ophthalmic Association for comprehensive healthcare and research delivery. The campus sprawls across 32 lush green acres, housing buildings with a total built-up area of 12,00,000 sq. ft. SIMS offers MBBS (150 seats), PG MD/MS across 14 departments (40 seats), and Nursing and Dental programs — all under one roof. The attached 1,100-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital features 16 operation theatres, advanced ICU/NICU/CCU facilities, one of Karnataka's best radiology centres (MRI, Spiral CT, Mammography, High-Resolution Color Doppler, Ultrasound), a blood bank, 24×7 trauma and emergency services, and student demo rooms alongside all OPDs. The hospital provides free and subsidised medical care to patients below the poverty line through its 'GLP' program.
