Uttar Pradesh Rajarshi Tandon Open University (UPRTOU), Prayagraj, is the only state open university in Uttar Pradesh, established in 1998 under the U.P. Rajarshi Tandon Open University Act No. 10 of 1999, passed by the Uttar Pradesh Legislature and assented to by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh on 24 March 1999. The university is named after Bharat Ratna Rajarshi Purushottam Das Tandon, and its first academic session began in July 1999. Admission Process

Admission is taken twice a year in two sessions - July session (online applications open 1 July, normally closing 15 September) and January session (1 January to 15 March). Aadhaar and ABC ID (Academic Bank of Credits) registration are mandatory at the time of admission. UPRTOU delivers all its programmes through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, supplemented in some cases by online delivery, self-learning material (SLM), periodic counselling classes at Study Centres, and term-end examinations. The university's academic work is organised into nine Vidyashakhas, or Schools: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Education, Management Studies, Computer & Information Sciences, Health Sciences, Vocational Studies and Agricultural Sciences. Its physical infrastructure spans three campuses in Prayagraj - the Ganga Campus, which houses the Vice-Chancellor's and Registrar's offices, the admission and finance sections, and the examination department; the Saraswati Campus, which hosts the academic Schools, the Centre for Internal Quality Assurance, library, computer laboratory and auditorium; and the Yamuna Campus, largely used for staff residences.

The university is accredited with a B+ Grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and is recognised by the University Grants Commission's Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB) for programmes delivered in ODL and online mode.
