Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), headquartered at Trombay, Mumbai, is India's largest and premier multi-disciplinary nuclear research centre under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Established in January 1954 (as the Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay, renamed BARC in 1967 in memory of its founder Dr. Homi J. Bhabha), it carries out R&D across the entire spectrum of nuclear science and engineering — reactor technology, fuel cycle, materials science, electronics and instrumentation, chemical engineering, physical and chemical sciences, environment and radiation monitoring, and applications of radiation in healthcare, agriculture, and industry. BARC's principal route for students is not conventional degree admission but two national recruitment-cum-training programmes leading to a career as a DAE Scientific Officer: the one-year Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Postgraduates (OCES) and the two-year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme (DGFS) for engineering graduates pursuing a sponsored M.Tech at IIT Bombay or IIT Madras. Selection is via the BARC Online Screening Test and/or a valid GATE score, followed by a Selection Interview. OCES/DGFS training is conducted at BARC Training Schools at Mumbai, Kalpakkam, Indore, and Hyderabad. On successful completion, Trainee Scientific Officers (TSOs) are appointed as Scientific Officer 'C' (Level-10, 7th CPC) — a Group 'A' Gazetted post — and posted to DAE units such as BARC, NPCIL, IGCAR, AERB and others. Separately, BARC hosts undergraduate/postgraduate students for short-term Practical Training and Project Work (coordinated by HRDD, BARC) during their academic curriculum, and BARC scientists supervise Ph.D. research awarded through Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) — the Deemed-to-be-University (est. 2005) that unifies the academic programmes of DAE's constituent research institutions (BARC, TIFR, IGCAR, SINP, IMSc and others). HBNI is UGC-recognised and AICTE-approved, and was ranked #20 Overall, #12 among Universities, and #7 among Research Institutions in NIRF 2025. There is no tuition fee at BARC — TSOs and DGFS Fellows are paid a monthly training stipend (the OCES-2026 cycle is reported at approximately Rs. 74,000/month plus a one-time book allowance of around Rs. 30,000, though brochures for individual cycles have varied and should be checked directly) and, after successful training, drawn into the regular DAE Scientific Officer pay structure as Group 'A' Gazetted officers, along with hostel/quarters accommodation at Anushakti Nagar, Mumbai.
