SAMC was established in 2002 as a unit of Santhigiri Ashram. The hospital at Olasseri, Palakkad, was started in 1997 by Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru himself as a 20-bed charitable base hospital, expanding to a 100-bed teaching hospital by 2002-03 when the BAMS college formally commenced.

The Ashram works beyond caste, colour, and creed. It has been recognised by the Government of India's Ministry of Science & Technology through CSIR as a Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO).
